Ok, so I figured this out. My code for it is somewhat customised, so I'll need to make it more generic before posting it. Hopefully that won't take too many days...
OK, this is now fixed, it was a server-side issue and needed the server either updating to at least SAP_BASIS 740 SP09, or having SAP Note 2038061 applying.
