Customer team structure for PI / XI

Hi,

We are currently doing a conceptual study for the implementation of SAP NetWeaver PI / XI. On the technical track we are fine, also on the cost benefit side.

Nevertheless, customer is asking one tricky question on the organizational part:

How should his team (organization, headcount, roles) look like to best support the PI infrastructure?

• How many XI developers, should they be located in the development teams?

• How many XI basis resources, should they be located in the support and operations team?

Our quantity structure is: around 200 Interfaces, expected volume around 350 GB.

If somebody has some real life experiences and project examples on this organizational topic, every input is highly appreciated.

According to number of objects we are geting,we have to deside..in my case my project is of 140 interfaces and complete XI development who are experienced are 10 and remaining 10 are junio developers.

Minimum there should be 5 and in that 3 sholud be Experience guys.

You've not really covered any of the basic questions that need to be understood before someone plucks some vague numbers out of the air at complete random... The figures quoted could be hugely under estimated or over the top...

For Basis:

How complex will the landscape be?

How many servers? What O/S? advanced clusters with mutilple nodes and load balancing/failsafe or single Servers? How many SLDs?

Time scales for installation and configuration?

Development:

Timescale for creating 100+ interfaces? Complexity of interfaces? WIll you require ABAP and Java Developers as well as XI/PI consultants? will they be simple point to point or have complex BPMs? Will you be customising each object or taking advantage of SOA/ESR? What about ongoing support? future developments?

We have over 40+ interfaces and there are 6 developers and 3 Basis and most of us cross over into ABAP/Java and Basis - for a few months, then on to next Project!

You could have 100 people in for 10 days or 10 people in for a year... Will the resrouces be permanent or fixed term? depends on timescales and money available....

Barry, thanks again.

As mentioned I am aware of the complexity and also the missing questions. That's exactly why I asked for concrete customer experience about how the customer team structure might look like. Not only numbers, but also tasks, organisation and so on.

In the meantime I learnt in some other investigations, that many of the larger XI implementations are done by our partners.
