SAP HANA Express, does it expired after 90 days

Hi,

Looking to get clarification from SAP HANA support. Is the SAP HANA, express edition truly free for system that are 32GB RAM and smaller? We have downloaded this and it is great for development and testing purpose. According to this link,http://go.sap.com/developer/topics/sap-hana-express.html it seem free. But when we used SAP Hana Studio to connect to the database, it show that the license expired in 90 days under database connection properties. It show that we have a license type for temporary license and expired in 3 month. Not sure if this is just a bug on the HANA studio or I really have an issue.

I downloaded the binary from the link I shown. Then installed this on a redhat linux in my VM that has 32 GB of RAM. I just want to know if it is safe to use this for testing and it does not expired after 90 days.

Hi Louis,

1. It depends on the hardware key of each instance. If you have different hardware keys for each VM then you have to apply for each hardware key a license. As far as I tested a user is not restricted to a single license for one hardware key. And you have to apply the license only for the SystemDB (every tenant database is under the same license as its SystemDB).

2. You assumption is correct. After one year you have to apply for a new license for the same box (or earlier).

Thank you both Florian and Denys for your responds. That is very helpful especially the YouTube video showing all the steps. I just didn't know there was a license, now I do. Just a couple follow up.

1. If I create two instances on this VM. HXE and HXF. Will I need to get two licenses or am I only allow on on instance HXE?

2. I assume after one year. I should be able to apply for another test license on the same box?

Hello Louis,

it seems that you do not have obtained and applied a license key for HXE. By default HXE will stop working after 90 days, but you can obtain a free license key and apply it. The license key is valid for one year. After that a new license key can be applied.

You can find the information how to obtain and apply the license key either in the downloaded "Get Starting" guide (downloaded via the HXE installer) or here.
