Moving from XI R2 SP2 to XI 3.0 - clean install or upgrade?

My company is currently using Business Objects Enterprise XI R2 SP2 and they want to move to XI R3.0. Is there any benefit to completely wiping the previous version and doing a clean install compared to trying to use the upgrade process?

I'm still fairly new to this product so I don't know whether we do anything considered out of the norm. I presume we can back up our files/settings from R2, and them re-import them into R3.

If anyone has any advice as to what is the better approach I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Would anyone happen to have a workplan for an upgrade from XI R2 to XI 3.x? What are the various steps involved, and especially a plan for upgrading Production, where you risk wiping out existing install and getting a corrupt new one. How can one cleanly upgrade Prod with the lowest risk?

Any thoughts or documentation (a worklist or plan, if at all) would be a great help!

Take a backup of the CMS and Audit (if enabled) database along with the Filestore (Input/Output) before upgrading your production server.

This assures a very minimal risk of losing your data while upgrading.

And then you may choose to do a clean install or upgrade install.

After much consideration I have to side with the Clean Install.

For preference a side by side install, use import wizard to migrate content, and after uninstalling XIr2 fix the XI 3.1 and Tomcat ports.

The simple upgrade is a great idea. I look forward to working with it again in a future release.

I've just run a simple upgrade of XIr2 SP4 to XI3.1, all content and settings came across fine, except linked universes which had to be reimported from a BIAR.

Also noticed that the scheduled instances did not get copied accross. We have an open issue with SAP

I originally thought this thread was for the opinion of which one was easier, now you know why most of us said clean install

Hi,

I am going to be running the upgrade on a demo install next week. It is a single box installation, so the upgrade should work. If it does not I will be falling back and creating a clean install, and upgrading the db. Finally if this is not successful I will be trying to use the import wizard.

I will update with the progress.

Regards

It's better to do a clean install and then migrate content from XIR2 to XI3.1 using Import Wizard or thru CMS DB copy and FRS copy and Update Objects.
