SAP Activate offers advice for customers how to introduce and follow a Clean Core strategy to make and keep their ERP systems clean and stay or become agile, ready for innovation and easy to upgrade. In the best case, customers have started with a clean core strategy already with their move to SAP S/4HANA, meaning that they have established a Solution Standardization Board and already aim at using standard business processes, interfaces, and reducing custom code. This roadmap "SAP Activate Methodology for SAP S/4HANA upgrades" intends to remind customers of the clean core paradigm and sticking to clean core measures. For customers who start fresh with a clean core strategy, we explain the clean core paradigm and how to reach a clean core step by step.

-----------------

The “Clean Core” is a concept that helps customers achieve modern, flexible and future-ready ERP systems which are lean, with optimized business processes, easy to upgrade and ready to innovate.

This concept is not only valid for SAP S/4HANA Cloud systems, but also holds true for an SAP S/4HANA on-premise system and eases a potential move to the cloud on the long-term roadmap.

A productive, mature SAP S/4HANA system can be close to a clean core or far away from standard, depending on the transition path that was taken to move to SAP S/4HANA: A newly implemented SAP S/4HANA following the standard is clean per se while a converted SAP ERP system usually needs a not insignificant effort to come back to a clean core.

For an upgrade of an SAP S/4HANA system coming from a “Greenfield” or new implementation, the Clean Core concept means to keep the core clean with every extension and enhancement and follow the Clean Core principles.

For an upgrade of an SAP S/4HANA system coming from a “Brownfield” or system conversion, the Clean Core concept continues to be a “make the core clean”, following an iterative approach. Clean Core cannot be created in a single step, but means to analyze the current extensions, processes, interfaces… and transform, re-platform, automate, and bring back to standard, aiming at more agility, faster integration, reduced upgrade effort, and efficient and secure operations. Use every process adaptation as a chance to reflect on SAP’s standard and extension methodology and implement new functionality in a clean-core-compliant way.

You may use the tag “Clean Core” to filter the roadmap for all activities and tasks that relate to a clean core strategy.
