Searchservices and searchbackoffice extensions documentation

We are trying to use an external search provider and would like to use the searchservices and searchbackoffice extensions. But unfortunately, we can not find any documentation on those. Looks like those were introduced in 2011. Is there any meaningfull description or technical documentation on the functionality and usage of those new extensions?

Relevant question, still documentation is not to be found in the SAP Help portal, unfortunately. Please provide a link to the documentation so we can understand an benefit from these 'new' extensions.
