Using Backup Server with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager

Hi,

we have a problem with TSM.

Based on docu (https://help.sap.com/viewer/4c9797ba022944a7b001c5e0ff761a59/16.0.4.0/en-US/a6643125bc2b10148e6cdc1dce137f58.html) we cannot to setup TSM correcly.
How to setup TSM for ASE backup? (copy-groups etc.) ?

Dump database/dump transaction pass all file-based operations to TSM to perform. Backup server does not control the actual storage operations performed by TSM. To support TSM, there is specific syntax used and described in the ASE documentation:

In addition, the TSM catalog information can be directly queried and managed from ASE using the 'sp_querysmobj' and 'sp_deletesmobj' stored procedures.

SAPNote 1933297 describes the additional keywords - 'with init' that can be used with TSM to tell TSM to overwrite a backup archive of the same name. This keyword is also documented in the 'dump database' and 'dump transaction' documentation referred to above.

Questions about copy groups, including TSM policies, are TSM-specific and should be posed to IBM/Tivoli.

A quick look at Tivoli docs makes me think that what you are asking (copygroup) for is not in SAP / ASE domain to answer, but needs to be raised with IBM:

The ASE docs only shows steps specific to ASE side of a TSM install and it refers in several places to TSM docs. For general TSM commands / config, this is not the forum.

Apart from that, there is no clear problem description. This applies to any issue you log here. Please be specific about steps you have taken, at what step (from manual if applicable) does something fail and what is the error encountered.

If you believe the issue you are raising is 'ASE' specific, please provide clearer details of the problem. But as per above, it looks more like you need to consult IBM or a TSM forum.

Hi,
we are trying to configure TSM for ASE Database and we need to setup somehow policies there.
That's why we have some questions:
- what is data structure generated by backupserver. If every backup object is timestamped or backup objects have same names and we use versioning on backup storage? I found note 1933297 - Error "Dump operation does not allow duplicate archive name" during database dump - SAP ASE and now I know that every backup need to have uniqe name.

- do we need to utilize archive storage for transacion logs and/or backup storage and backup/archive policies. Which data flow is needed/recomended by backupserver?

1) What kind of copy group should be user? backup and/or archive?

2) What kind of copy group do database objects and transaction logs go to?
