SUSE Upgrade Approach

Our infrastructure team encountered difficulties doing a test upgrade from SUSE 11 to 12 in our AWS hosted SAP systems. They have consulted with both SUSE and AWS but were unable to complete the upgrade. One of the approaches they are now looking into is:

  1. Create an AMI from a source machine
  2. Export the AMI to a VMware machine format
  3. Load the VM to ESXi machine
  4. Do the upgrade
  5. Put it back in the cloud

My questions are:

1. What possible impact would this approach have to the SAP system and what testing would we (the Basis team) would have to do validate database and application integrity?

2. Can we just do a homogeneous system copy from a SUSE 11 machine to a SUSE 12 one?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Reynaldo,

I added a tag for "Software Logistics - System Provisioning" to your question, as you mentioned performing a homogeneous system copy as a way to get from one release of SUSE to another, and SWPM is the tool for that.

With regard to your question #2, I am not (yet) a SUSE expert, so my answer is hardly definitive, but in general, yes, you should be able to do a homogeneous system copy between systems that share the same operating system, even if they are on different releases of that operating system.

Cheers,
