Content Server upgrade/installation procedure

Content Server upgrade.

We have upgraded our Content Server from 6.4 to 6.5 and updated our MaxDB database which it is using.

From there I did a install of Content Server 7.53 on the same host, but with a different user account, then migrated the configuration of the existing Content Server to the new installation.

I did a upgrade in place of our existing Development/Test SAP Content Server by using a new install on the same host.

Is this a recommended practice for a Content Server upgrade, or should I have used the same account for both installations on the same host to avoid any permission/authorization issues?

Or should I have did a new Content Server install on a different host host?

Hello,

I hope you're doing well.

As per SAP Note 2786364 - SAP Content Server and Cache Server 7.5 (and higher),

the recommended procedure to upgrade to SAP Content Server 7.5 from 6.5 is as follows:

Due to the new architecture of Content Server 7.5, it is not possible to perform in-place upgrades of existing Content Server installations of lower releases and patch levels. This applies to the program only, not the data. The repositories themselves do not change.

The upgrade process therefore consists of the following steps:

Create a new installation of Content Server 7.5
Migrate the configuration of the existing Content Server to the new installation
Stop the existing Content Server and start the new one
Verify the availability of the new Content Server
Archive and remove the old installation

If the new installation and the old installation are not sharing the same host and port, it is also possible to operate the new and old installation in parallel, as long as they don't access the same repositories at the same time. This could be useful when migrating only some of the existing repositories to the new installation (e.g. one repository at a time.)

Please make sure to carefully read and follow the instructions provided in SAP Note 2786364.

Best regards,
SAP Product Support
