Inbox flooded

janbuchmann

Dear all

Plz help me out. Something has recently changed in this forum regarding notifications. I only used to receive notifications in my inbox for my own questions and questions/blogs I follow, respectively. But now my community inbox gets flooded with any new question with any tagged I follow. It never used to be like that. Kindly note that the option New questions in tags I follow under Communication is Off.

Thanks & regards
Jan

Hi,

It basically all comes down to the SAP Community design philosophy: If it works well, but not by design, fix it. If it works poorly, but by design, don't fix it.

Flooding the inbox was by design. When you follow a tag, you get notifications of all activity in said tag. The settings in your profille are only meant for email messages. According to SAP this is what we want. This also means that it will not be fixed.

It just did not work until recently. Now it has been "fixed". Hence the flooding of our inboxes with useless messages, drowning out the usefull ones. That the Activity Stream does pretty much the same, does not matter.

The workaround is not following any tags. If you used this feature to get quick access to said tags, like everybody else, you did it wrong. You may now choose between using bookmarks and a lot of surfing, and a lot of searching and surfing.

SAP is however developing a new inbox / notification / messaging tool, that is supposed to offer more granular control of what, how and when information is disseminated to us. This has not been officially anounced yet and there is no time table for this, so feel free to hold your breath.

Regards,

Johan

Hi Johan

Thanks for your message - and the chuckle. I guess the design is not being questioned then...

As per your suggestion, I've unfollowed all tags. Still not the way I'd interpret this functionality as 'my areas of interest', but I guess I'll have to live with bookmarks then, as I will definitely not to do 'searching and surfing'.

"That the Activity Stream does pretty much the same, does not matter."

Activity Stream is much better for this purpose, because in Activity Stream you can see not only new questions, but also new answers and comments!

Hey, Community Members, I've got good news - you can adjust your Inbox preferences as before in your Communications settings. Below is a bit more context on what happened and what to expect in the future for Notifications and Subscriptions topics.

The scope of platforms and content covered by our central notification service is growing and our aim is to cover all key transactional notifications for your relationship with SAP.

We also plan to treat the primary SAP web platforms as a single experience so that your session will continue as you move between them, ensuring immediate access to notifications from the harmonized header. As part of this overarching strategic direction, if you choose to enable notification for a subscription it will also be delivered to your online SAP inbox though you can choose if you wish to also be notified via email.

Finally, as part of this longer-term experience harmonization work, we want you to be able to subscribe to content or topics across SAP to bring you more relevant content across a variety of platforms, building off the personalized content model long available in Community.

Unfortunately, we rolled out part of this change prematurely, without notice and with a major flow: the inability to subscribe to content without enabling notification. We will be rolling back this change ASAP and keep you informed before reimplementing the updated (enhanced to allow content subscription without notification) feature.

Hi Jan / Daniel

Have you checked different browsers? We don't have any issues.

Notifications seems like a backend feature. It should not depend on a browser.
