Dear all

we are moving to ECC6 ehp4 to EHP6 we don't have suffcient hardware for shadow system so we go directly it takes lot of time in all phases

we made test system sucessfully npw we need to do samething in PRD server we have db and app in that we are not able keep PRD down for many days

we have 32 gb ram on PRD

can we  export database of  PRD and import in some other system  and make that system as PRD for stanby server for some days we can work on dbci and we can keep app server down once update done with EHP6 then again restore this database to original server

Thus will effect the business

kindly suggest some points so we can go further

Regards

There is no need to create a standby system on a new machine. Instead of doing that have you thought of using the remote shadow instance like I have suggested. Moreover with 32 GB memory it is possible to have the shadow instance on the same machine. You just need to optimize the upgrade in a proper way.

Hi,

The approach of copy production and restoring database is incorrect on upgraded system.

You may land up in trouble after doing this.

Have a look at this document which gives you an overview of advance features of sum.

There is an option to run the shadow instance on a different host called "Use remote shadow instance" in the SUM. You may make use of that.

Hi,

can we  export database of  PRD and import in some other system  and make that system as PRD

Yes you can export the database of PRD and import the same to other system, but as per my understandings you are going to use two PRD server at your end,one is for the upgrade process from EHP4 to EHP6 and other is for regular activities of production. Please confirm ?

we can keep app server down once update done with EHP6 then again restore this database to original server

As per your scenario all production users will work on the standby server which you made for the time being, here the main gap comes as you are upgrading the other system and users are working on other standby,so database gaps will come in seen.Database export import will not be beneficial for you after one system upgraded and with system on live production users are working.

It would be better to opt sufficient hardware resources for Production system.

Please correct me if i misunderstand your question and elaborate as per you.

Dear

your suggestion are correct as per requirement as of my understanding but how to fill that database gap .

can we do system copy instead of export import once the upgrade is done on main server

means the user which were working on stand by server with that server if we do system copy to upgrade system

in this scenario we have one system of EHP4 and another is of EHP6 can we do system copy like this

Kindly suggest possibly way

Hi Rajendra

Kindly follow the steps & could you share your OS / DB size details

1. System copy from live Production to test system copy, in test system you are going to start the upgrade.

2. Do the upgrade ECC EHP 4 to 6 in test system, during this process you have to calculate over all timings of upgrade process of SUM and all other issues.

3 After upgraded to ECC6 EHP6 in the test system, do the full function level test with help of ABAPer /Function consultant.

4. Based on the test environment result, you have to perform the same upgrade process in live production system with minimum down time, during this process users must be locked and all other background jobs are suspended.

Hello Rajendra,

As you told you have 32 GB Ram on Prd as comparted to 10GB on test system.

When you perfrom the Update, actual downtime comes at the Execution stage, it will definately take less time then your test sytem because of High memory and number of CPU's.

You can set the more proces for the downtime in the configurtion parameters (By selecting Advance configuration) and set SGEN to No ther as well. If you have multiple dialog instances you can click on the check box for them as well. This way you can plan this in the same sytem.

I belive if you have 3 days of downtime avaiable the you can plan this better way int he same system.

Again it depents how much memory/CPU being utilized in day to day oprations.
