Linking leads and opportunities

I have a number of questions:

1. Is it possible to convert a lead to n opportunities or only 1?

2. If it is possible to have n opportunities from a lead, what happens to lead status; I assume unchanged by creation of any opportunity?

3. When converting a lead to an opportunity can the opportunity account be a third party i.e. not same as lead account?

4. Is it possible to associate an opportunity that was created directly as an opportunity retrospectively to a pre-existing lead? For cases where user creating opportunity was unaware of the pre-existing lead?

5. In rare cases an opportunity causes us to realise that in the background there is a significant lead that is worth developing to generate further opportunities; typically from various 3rd parties, how to manage?

5.1. Preferred would be to create lead, associate existing opportunity(ies) to it and then convert further opportunities from it

5.2. Would I be correct in thinking that 5.1 is definitely a custom solution and so we should either:

5.2.1. Create lead, close existing opportunity and recreate through converting lead

5.2.2. Use related and hierarchy opportunity functionalities to model the lead (as an opportunity) to opportunity relationships

Hi Patrick,

I have some answers to you questions:

1. Is it possible to convert a lead to n opportunities or only 1?

You can convert a lead in one or more opportunitie.

2. If it is possible to have n opportunities from a lead, what happens to lead status; I assume unchanged by creation of any opportunity?

It really depends on your customizing. You can maintain statuses for leads in Fine-Tune.

3. When converting a lead to an opportunity can the opportunity account be a third party i.e. not same as lead account?

Yes, the opportunity account can be a third party.

4. Is it possible to associate an opportunity that was created directly as an opportunity retrospectively to a pre-existing lead? For cases where user creating opportunity was unaware of the pre-existing lead?

You can maintain controls or restrictions to prevent this situation from happening in the future. Or there is potential for a development in this situation.

Point 5 is worth a deeper discussion, if you are intereterst, you can send me a message.

Hope, I helped.

Regards,

Andrea

Hi Andrea, thanks for your response, helps greatly.

Re point 4. In your reply "You can maintain controls or restrictions to prevent this situation from happening in the future. Or there is potential for a development in this situation." I understood that to resolve this we should design our business process to control or restrict this occurring in future, that there is no C4C functionality to support this. Or did you mean that there are some options in C4C standard that could at least partially help if enabled? It is these that I would like to first find and review to determine our next steps.

5.1 would require C4C development so 5.2 is the workaround we should first evaluate. At this stage I am just investigating the fit of C4C standard to our real world situation to determine the gap, then determine our business and system options.

Your clarification on point 4 is much appreciated.
