Hi,
Version is like in which login version you are using. Something like SAP 4.7, where 4.7 is the version. Where as the release is diffrent and it is related to the component information. once after login, in the first screen click system--> status. You shall get a window, where you can find the SAP system data details in the right hand side. In that particular area, there is display button. If you click that, you can get the information of each software component installed in your current version.
Software Component:
The software component describes a set of objects that are always delivered together. A software component is released in succcessive versions with new functions. You can provide each component separately with Support Packages.
Objects are assigned to a software component by assigning the packages of the object. This enables objects from one software component to move to another software component when you switch to a new release.

Hi,
Versions are like Macro-level(Top level), where as releases are something like micro-level(low-level). So inside a version basically, lot of software components are installed. So whenever a software component is upgraded, it usually comes with a new release no say 620, 640 etc. So even if you are using version 4.7, if your basis people has upgraded some patches, that particular component now may have a new release no, but your version may be the same. Where as version is like upgrading the entire system from 4.7 to 5.0.
