Tables LTDX and LTDXD ALV variant tables

Can anyone perhaps assist with an explanation of how the tables LTDX and LTDXD work?

I am trying to find a place where the initial default layout gets set. I have an issue where it seems the read on LTDXD fails because there are no entries in this table that are linked to LTDX (Default variant), which is read prior to this select statement. Subsequently, I get an error that there is no layout when trying to execute the program because the REUSE_ALV_VARIANT_DEFAULT_GET function call fails. message 0K017

What happened to the entry in LTDXD? Could it have been lost during the Service Pack upgrade? Are you able to update these tables directly?

Any information or links that could clarify will be appreciated.

It's standard, so you should check SAP notes and SAP support.

Thank you for your suggestion, I have tried notes as well as SAP help, to no avail. Do you have any links that you could recommend where I could do a successful search?
