SAP comes with newer version based on the Business changes that happeneds over a period of time to keep upto date with the latest developments in the world of IT. Over a period of years they will stop the support for older version, currently the support for SAP R/3 4.6 C is till end of 2008/2009 after which it be comes a paid service if you do not upgrade your R/3.
The role of ABAP in Upgrade mainly depends of change the exisiting code of all BDC prg as the screen names and Fields will be changed from Version to version.
Compile all the prgs there may be some change in tables/field names which will result in syntax errors. etc...
Please reward points if useful.

Hi,
A typical SAP upgrade would upgrading to a higher service pack. Normally this service pack will contain all the bug fixes for previous SP and some mandatory notes that needs to be installed. This is done basically by the Basis guys and I dont see any specific developer role here other than for running some reports.
Thanks..
