As you are referring to them, ABAP 6.20 is really Web Application Server 6.20, which runs underneath of R/3 4.7 Enterprise, basically is is the Basis Layer of old R/3 releases, which had a major overhaul, and became a true web application server. ABAP 6.40, is really what we call NetWeaver 2004(or NetWeaver 6.40) which is another name change as well as added functinoality. NetWeaver 6.40 runs underneath ECC 5.0, so really if you are running ECC 5.0, you are also running the NW 6.40. Netweaver 7.0 is the current release which runs underneath of ECC 6.0
