Dear All
We are planning a migration of our BIP servers to a new data center
in the process we would like to evaluate Linux and Windows options (our current platform is Windows)
would anybody help us with some pros / cons of BOE on Linux compared to Windows
our argument is that Linux (like any *ux OS) is better with memory handling etc and also troubleshooting and reading log files is much easier on Linux
Yes we are aware that Mobile requires Web App on Windows so we intend to keep Tomcat on Windows and our BO services on linux
Many thanks in advance
I wonder where is this notion that its easier to troubleshoot/read logs on linux comes from ?
I see no difference in this area at all, with slight egde going to Win due to pletora or proper tools to do so on it...
Mobile servers are supported on linux from SP5, by the way. In my experience the product runs exactly the same on any supported OS.

Hi,
This question has been asked and answered many times across various SCN discussion spaces. Please do search here and wider.
Generally, pros/cons go like this:
- Arguably, a reduction of TCO is achievable bringing all environments to the same Operating System.
- In some cases Windows might be a better option, e.g. if you need to import Excel files or if you need to connect to SQL Server. However this might also be possible from AIX but with some difficulties/restrictions.
- Vice versa, Windows doesn’t support everything compared to AIX. If we take Hadoop sources as an example, it is only supported on Linux.
- Additionally, sometimes fixes are available for Windows first, then other platforms later.
a SWOT analysis is recommended to identify the best choice when looking at the requirements for projects, and as a medium/long term decision for your future projects.
Regards,
H
