10.5 for SAP - benefits ?

Looks promising :

http://ibmdatamag.com/2013/04/super-analytics-super-easy

But which of those new features will be available to SAP applications ?

Adaptive compression introduced in 10.1 allowed us to save ~ 50% of DB volume .... if 10.5 has better compression techniques it will be nice.

And when willl it be available for SAP customers more less ?

Regards

Marcin

Note 1851853 - DB6: Using DB2 10.5 with SAP Applications

Column organized tables with BLU Acceleration

Column-organized tables add columnar capabilities to DB2 databases. Data is stored with column organization, allowing vector processing of column data. This table format is aimed at providing performance improvements for OLAP workloads.

The use of column organized tables is currently not allowed with SAP applications. The use of column organized tables with SAP NetWeaver BW is currently under investigation.

Dear Marcin Ozdzinski,

Following features will make an impact with version. 10.5.

1. Reduced impact of indexing on search

2. You can search the column data by using text search functions.

3. DB2 Advanced Copy Services interface facilitates the use of customized scripts.

4. Support for NOT ENFORCED primary key and unique constraints.

5. InfoSphere Optim Configuration Manager.

6. IBM Data Studio.

I wonder how SAP customers will be able/allowed to use the new BLU Acceleration features?

As stated on the IBM homepage, the DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition is needed for BLU, but normally SAP customers get online the DB2 Enterprise Server Edition.

Well, looks like something will be clarified in few weeks:

https://websmp109.sap-ag.de/~form/handler?_APP=01100107900000000342&_EVENT=REDIR&_NNUM=1598914&_NLAN...

SAP HANA and 10.5 AESE could be real competitors, if column based tables will be supported under SAP DB2 installations.

According to this article 10.5 has much better  memory utilization techniques than HANA:

http://www.infoworld.com/d/data-management/ibm-remolds-db2-105-hadoop-and-in-memory-database-killer-...

Comparing to HANA , DB2  has High Availablity out of the box and support  for backup and cluster agents.

One more thing , looks like BLU was already tested on SAP installations :

http://public.dhe.ibm.com/common/ssi/ecm/en/imm14121usen/IMM14121USEN.PDF

" We asked a highly regarded DBA that we know, Andrew Juarez (Lead SAP Basis and DBA at Coca- Cola Bottling Consolidated), to try BLU Acceleration, and he found that “it makes our analytical queries run 4 – 15x faster.”

Tadam :

https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1851832

And we have BLU onboard:

[CDE=YES], [CDE=NO]: Related to the use of DB2 BLU Acceleration (that is, the use of DB2 columnar tables)

If you are using DB2 BLU Acceleration, SHEAPTHRES_SHR and SORTHEAP cannot be tuned by STMM. You must set SHEAPTHRES_SHR and SORTHEAP to fixed values. Other memory consumers are not affected and can be set to AUTOMATIC.

Only license status for AESE / BLU is unclear now

Heh

Compare version 3 and 4 for note:

https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1851832

Now BLU is unavailable for SAP

Looks  funny. I've taken popcorn and now observing wrestling between IBM and SAP on sofa

So 10.5 is available for SAP

And we have answer for 10.5 license question:

https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1260217

So basically we are instaliing 10.5 AESE and have BLU onboard , but due to license restrictions we are unable to use it currently

Hi Marcin,

The link below should give you features from 10.5 release. As of now availability date for 10.5 to customers is not yet announced. Only a preview of this new release has been published.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Deepak

I've already red those materials , also some IDUG presentations.

Just curious if SAP has something to share beside note 1835822

Espacially BLU technologies for SAP ...

Hi Marcin,

I too came across this SAP note but could not find any release strategy for 10.5.

I feel its a mistake in the SAP note that they have mentioned db2 10.5 ( It should be db2 10.1)

Existing supported version for SAP is db2 10.1 FP3

Don't think it is mistake. SAP is testing new versions much earlier than IBM is releasing them. As i remember notes with version 10.1   were available in june and july while GA was announced in august.

There is already a benchmark for SAP with DB2 V10.5

http://www.sap.com/solutions/benchmark/sd3tier.epx

so I also think it wasn't a mistake

The high compression rate comes from the column-organized tables, but in the first step you can most likely use these tables read only. ==> DB2 V10.5 will be in direct competition to SybaseIQ for the NLS Solution.

Do you think the in-memory database will be a competitor to SAP HANA?

I like that the server restriction for PureScale (only IBM Server) has been lifted with DB2 V10.5, now x86 Server are supported.

Yes , thats why i'm asking which of the features will be available for SAP. Column tables + SSD based storage + 1 TB RAM and who wants to buy overprized HANA ?

Marcin, I think what you are asking is a thought that not a few of us out there are making... then again, that question also applies to IBM and it´s Netezza product line. At least on paper, DB2 10.5 makes Netezza a bit of a redundant stack of products.
