SAP EP Upgrade from 7.0 to 7.3

Hi,

I am working on SAP EP upgrade from 7.0 to 7.3

Current environment:

SAP Netweaver 7.0 SP 26

SQL server 2005 SP 4

Windows 2003

Target environment:

SAP Netweaver 7.3 Ehp1 SP 6

Sql server 2012

Windows 2008 R2.

I plan to do below steps:

1. Copy the current system to new system which is running in windows 2008 R22.

2. Upgrade Sql from 2005 to 2012

3. Upgrade SAP from 7.0 to 7.3

Question:

1.      For the step 1: can I use the system copy OR backup restore. What is the SAP recommended version for EP

2.      Can i do step 1 and step 2 together. Meaning can i install new OS (2008 ) and db (2012) and restore the data. In this steps i am doing OS, db and 32 to 64 bit upgrade. Is it recommended by SAP

Thanks and Regards,

Suganthi AN

1. You will have to do a System Copy because with AS JAVA a Java Export is required.

2. Yes, that is how I would do it. Do a System Copy from the source platform to the target platform and then upgrade the SAP release.

Be sure to check that the source SAP release is supported on the target platform.

Hi Pierre & Samuli,

Thanks for the details.

Question:

1.      For the step 1: can I use the system copy OR backup restore. What is the SAP recommended version for EP

From your reply I am clear that for EP system I need to use export/import. Backup/restore wil not work. thanks

2.      Can i do step 1 and step 2 together. Meaning can i install new OS (2008 ) and db (2012) and restore the data. In this steps i am doing OS, db and 32 to 64 bit upgrade. Is it recommended by SAP?

Still I have some question related to question 2

(I) Export the data from Win 2003 SQL 2005

(II) Option 1: Install Win 2008 R2 SQL 2005 – import , then do SQL 2012 upgrade

                OR

   Option 2: Install Win 2008 R2 SQL 20012 – import

May I know option 1 better or option 2. If I do option 2, I am doing OS, DB migration together. Is it creating any complications.

Please advise

Thanks

Hi Suganthi,

You can install directly SQL 2012 and import in this version.

It will cut the downtime resulting of the database migration.

If you want to reduce the downtime even more, you can do export and import in parallel. You'd export from the actual server and import on the new server. In that case you need a shared disk between the two servers to store the exported data.

Thanks Pierre and Samuli Kaski .

We got SAP confirmation as below.

Question1:

For EP java stack, you can only use the SAPinst (export/import) method

to do the system copy.

Question2:

The two path are both OK, they are both supported by SAP PAM.

For the path2 is more simple than Path1, and the possibility of

error occuring is lower. You can have a try the simpler path.

Hi Suganthi,

For your system copy, you should stick with the portal version you already have. As you're doing an OS migration I think you have to do the system copy instead of backup restore.

If you're doing a system copy, then you can export from Win 2K3 32 bit SQL Server 2003 and import on Win 2k12 64bit SQL Server 2012.

Pierre
