Kernel Upgrade - unicode or non unicode?

Hello All,

We are in the process of doing kernel upgrade after OS upgrade to 7.1. As per disp+work information, it clearly shows a non-Unicode but there was some confusion with the kernel version to go with based on two different sources. I am leaning toward option(a).

Could you please, suggest if we are on the correct path using kernel version mentioned in option(a) to upgrade based on current

disp+work information. Thanks a lot in advance.

Option (A) Additional Components ->SAP Kernel->SAP KERNEL 64-BIT->SAP KERNEL 7.20 64-BIT

SAPEXE_300-20005227.SAR Kernel Part I (for Basis 720/702)     Patch Level:300
SAPEXEDB_300-20005223.SAR Kernel Part II (for Basis 720/702)  Patch Level:300

Option (B) SAP PAM:

SAP KERNEL 7.20 EXT 64-BIT UC(1)

SAP KERNEL 7.21 EXT 64-BIT(1)

Hello,

I would recommend option "a" as well.

You may even try the latest SAPEXE/DB_402 set.

The "normal" kernel (without EXT) is supported for V5R3, V5R4, V6R1 and V7R1.

(In our environment I have upgraded an ECC 6.0 system from kernel 700 to kernel 720 (64bit non-unicode non_EXT).

The EXT-kernel I think is only supported for V7R1 - there is a SAP note that describes the properties and advantages of this EXT version. Note 1553301 - 7.20 EXT Kernel - Usage and Note 1553300 - 7.20 EXT Kernel - Extended Kernel Maintenance

Hope this helps,

FWIW, we opted for option B, using the 7.20EXT kernel as a DCK for a 7.0 system. Reading between the lines of note 1553300, we thought it might have a longer shelf life. So far, no real problems.

I'd recommend a higher SAPHOSTAGENT version, we have currently #137 in use.
