XI would request R3 to build an IDOC extract then if necessary convert it to another XML format (awaited by MDM) and supply it to the import manager (today via file system). The separation between XI and the ImportManager is clear. XI knows what to request from R/3 and how to bring it to a format understandable by MDM (currently - XML file) and the ImportManager knows how to import such XML file into the repository with all necessary checks on the way. So non of them can perform all the process solely.

      Hi,

To add to what Roman explained, XI is an integration tool from SAP which can be used for integration of SAP and non-SAP systems. The advantage with XI is, it is tightly integrated with R/3,so, we can directly import IDocs & BAPI's into XI. XI has tools for mapping and monitoring the messages that are sent across the systems.

As Roman said, it has both ABAP as well as J2EE engine. Hence, you will find the GUI similar to R/3 and also certain transactions are opened in browser.

With regards to MDM, Syndicator works in Sync with XI.

Hope this info is useful to you.

      Regards,

      RK

    Hi,

Maybe to add a few things to clarify. XI cannot, as it was the case with MDM 3.0, automatically be requested to extract or distribute data from and to other systems (that being R/3 systems or other applications). This is a manual procedure. XI can be triggered to e.g. extract data and map/convert data into a predefined or customized XML format for use with the MDM 5.5. The automatic functionality is expected from SAP in the near future however.

So XI is not tied with the current version of MDM, as one would think. Other integration products such as IBM Websphear could do the same thing. I think that is important to understand. Just shows that the ESA thinking is to some extent moving in the right direction.
