Hierarchies Alltogether !

I am confused on all the different hierarchy possibilities. (External, internal, Charaterictic Hierarchy, Structure Herarchy, user-defined...)

Can anybody help find a thorough document on subject, on when and why use whiwh type of hierarchy.
