Free characteristics or variable

Hi all,

This question will seem very beginner. I'm actually studying for BW Certification and I'm not quite sure when would be more appropriate to use a free characteristic or a variable. I don't see much difference so far.

Hi Sophie,

If we are talking about BEx then a free char is used for a additional drilldown after query executed and shown.

A variable is used when you want to restrict any of char and this restriction is determined by a user (user entry before the result show).
