Synchronizing Test Dimensions with Prod

Can anyone help with the best way to sychronize the dimensions for a test environment from production? I have created a package which copies the excel file and loads the dim and mbr tables for each dimension but when I process the cube the data is not valid, seems like there is a step I am missing. Can someone help with what shoud be done next? We are trying to basically update all the dimensions for our test environment based off of what has already been processed through the admin console in prod. But in our test environment we were hoping to create a nigtly package which does this automatically so we can bypass the admin console. Any ideas would be a great help.

    Hi Kevin

    As per Roberto's post, the backup and restore method of keeping the environments in sync is the safest option and the best. But seeing that you are having so many issues with the network, another option is to possibly create a batch file that copies the dimension xls or xlsx files from the WebFolders\AppSet\AdminApp directory on the PROD server to the respective QA server AdminApp folder.

    Then in your admin console of the QA system, follow the steps as you would in order to process the dimensions and ensure that you have 'Process Members from Member Sheet' selected and select the 'To Be Scheduled' option. This would in theory run a scheduled admin process of the dimensions from the member sheet. I have not personally tried this approach, but i would be interested and keen in seeing if it works and if its viable.

    That way you can keep your dimension members in sync with PROD.

    Hi Kevin,

    coppying the tables it's a risk, I will prefer a backup from Prod and restore on QA.

    But if you want to do it you should include also the ctbldim<dim name> tables, the dim <dim name> also with hierarchies (to align also the properties of the dims) and eventually the jrl tables and security tables if you need also these.

      aren't the servers on a backbone? you should transfer the backup only through the server network (you can do it also with external hard disk or pen drive).

      I'm not sure 100%, I never made in this manner, surely you need to copy also these tables but maybe I forgot something. You must try and see if after it's possible to process all dims and modify applications without issues, check also if adding proprties to dims you will obtain the new structure even in the QA environment.
