ESS / MSS implementation Portal Best Practices

Hi All,

I want to know what are the best practices for implementing ESS and MSS from Portal perspective.

1. Do we need to copy the ESS and MSS folders as delta link in the customer folder and then assign roles from the copied folder.

2. Do we need to copy the entire forlder for ESS and MSS which will include iviews, pages and workset also from the standard delivery or just the role folder.

3. What about common parts.Do we need to make a copy of common parts folder as well.

4. For each environment like Development,QA and Production, the BPs for ESS and MSS are delpoyed seperately or do they need to be transported from Development onwards into QA and then in Production once the BPs have been deployed in Development.

What are the things to keep in mind when implementing ESS and MSS from portal perspective.

Thanks to all.

Hi Saurabh,

It actually depends on your requirement such as if you want to configure launchpad then you need to do few configurations. But majority of the iViews we need to copy from Standard Portal Content folder. Again, if your requirement to use all the functionalities in Employee self services role or MSS then copying the role would save time. But make sure you make a copy of standard content but not delta copy.

And regarding Dev, QA and Production, it is actually like you need to use three different servers which definitely requires individual deployment in each server. Its just that you add them to you landscape and name them as Development, Quality and Production.

Hope this clears your doubts.

Thanks Uday.

I have spoken and heard from different people and it seems there is not one single approach which is recommended by SAP.

The approach becomes important if SAP audit is conducted.

So I am not able to understand which is the SAP recommended approach.

Some options which I have come across are :

1. Delta link Copy the complete folder for ESS and MSS to the customer folder and then remove the iviews not being used or add extra ones (custom ones) to the roles.

2. Copy (without delta link) as stated in point one above.

3. Copy only the roles of ESS and MSS and paste in the customer folder (as local copy and not delta link) and then remove or add iviews etc in the role itself.

4. Do the same as in 3 above but using delta link copy.

Which one of the above is the recommended approach by SAP or does SAP recommends something else.

If someone can answer this question then it will be a great help to everyone.

Saurabh
