Delta to ODS

I am doing a load from an external database to ODS.I am planning to do a delta load , but when I create an info package , I do not see the option for delta or init.

Any suggestions.

Hi Kathy,

The option for Init and Delta is based on the capability of the extractor to be able to provide delta records. As you mention you are using an external data base to laod into an ODS, may be this functionality is not possible. Can you provide more details about the load process...

You mentioned rightly , I am able to do delta from that ODS to a cube . But for that ODS, I am not able to do delta . As per Aneesh and you , it looks like I cannot do a delta for this ODS.

Right, Kathy.

If your DS is nor delta capable, then first ODS will not accept delta, it will create delta for load to further data targets.

Hi Kathy,

I guess that when you talk about infopackage you mean IP for data upload to ODS?

If your datasource doesn't support delta, then loading data first to ODS and then into another data target will give you this possibility. It's exactly your case.

For your final data target create and activate an update rule where put your first ODS as a datasource.

Updating data from first ODS to the data target with delta will appear in a IP when you'll update first ODS into data target.

The open architecture of SAP BW from Release 3.0 on allows you to integrate data from an external database using DB connect. It offers an option for extracting data into BW from tables and views in other external database management systems that are supported by SAP and are connected to BW.

The integration between BW and R/3 is seamless. DataSources and extractors are delivered along with a plug-in that is installed on the source system that makes the extraction of data into BW an easy task. Most of the DataSources are delta capable, which means they extract only the data that is newly created or changed after the last load into BW.

However, all the fun dries up when you use DB connect to extract data from a source system that is not part of SAP. Although BW allows you to connect to external databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM DB2, the delta capability delivered as a part of the Service Application Programming Interface (SAPI) component of the plug-in is not available. Because of the lack of delta capability, system administrators monitoring extraction and system performance have not always exploited DB connect.

Rohini: but how was the delta achieved. One time uploads do not clasify as delta.

How about a table in BW? Is that delta enabled

You can make it delta enabled using the generic delta functionality.

Rohini: How are you doing delta in DB Connect? Does the table on the database have only delta records?

We did one time upload for Ariba data. We have only histroy data in Ariba. And i did delta upload for few data targets.

The database is oracle , I am extracting data from this oracle table and putting it in the ODS. If possible can you tell me which extractors are delta enabled and which are not . This is just for my knowledge.

Also , I created a table in BW and I need to extract data from that to another ODS. Even that has the same issue.

Kathy,

DB Connect does not support delta. All datasources created usiong DB Connect are full extracts.

To see if a datasource supports delta or not - go to table RSOLTPSOURCE in BW and give the datasource. If there is an entry in delta type field then it supports delta ortherwise not.

On the table in BW - if you can identify a unique field that is always incrementing (number, date or timestamp, then delta cna be created using the generic delta functionality.

In RSO2, there is a button for generic delta. In this you specify the datasource field that can be used to dientify delta. It has to be a numeric pointer (always incrementing) or date (create/change both in one field) or timestamp (create and change in one field). Delta is identified using this field as a pointer.

DB connect support delta load.

I ahve DB connect and we do delta load with Db connect.
