CE 7.30 landscape: Where to install NWDI?

Former Member

Hi,

I'm still trying to setup NWDI together with CM Services and CTS+ in our CE environment.

We have three CE 7.30 systems: DEV, QUAL and PROD.

CTS+ is running on PI 7.11.

Now I've opened a message to SAP because I can't make it work.

During the chat with SAP support, I was told that the NWDI/CM services should not run on our DEV system (as it is configured now), but on our PROD system.

Is that correct?

The reason is that the CM services should not run on a runtime system (see note 754143).

But if I have a look at the attached illustration in the document "How-To Set up CM Services in Enhancement Package 2 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0", then it seems to me that all of our three systems are runtime systems.

Is that correct?

So in fact, it is not allowed to install NWDI on any of our CE systems???

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Eddie.

Hi Eddie,

There are others here who could comment more precisely but from personal experience using DEV CE for your NWDI can cause problems when  you import your SCA for deployment to other landscapes.  You really need it to be on a different server.

If you found the advice from support confusing, I suggest you reopen it and ask for clarification.

Jocelyn

Hi Jocelyn,

Thanks for your answer.

This is the response from SAP support:

which RTS you choose, does not matter, as long as not using CM service

system as the run-time system.

We recommend to use CM Services on NWDI Server.

Usually NWDI Server is a productive server and should not be installed

on a DEV system.

So should we run NWDI on our CE PROD system?

How is it done usually?

Thanks in advance.

nwdi should not be installed in your RTS, so ce prd definitely not an option.

dev is quite ok, just don't screw up your dev system as it holds all your source code.

Hi Jun,

sorry for asking stupid questions, but what does RTS exactly mean?

If I develop my CE product in NWDS and I want to deploy it on DEV system first (and then transport to QUAL and PROD via CTS+), then the DEV system should be the first RTS, right?

I've now changed Deploy Server in STMS to our QUAL system, and now another problem is solved:

We can use the "Synchronize service" now, which was not possible when DEV system was configured as RTS (see thread https://scn.sap.com/thread/3236056).

Would you recommend to have no RTS for our Development Configuration in DEV?

Could we then build and deploy locally to our DEV system?

Sorry, but this NWDI thing is totally confusing for me...

RTS= runtime system

i have no real life experience of CM.

cannot comment on that

during your development, you will deploy code to dev for testing from nwds right?

no need to use nwdi or cm.

you can put it in dev.

usually you won't use nwdi to deploy software to DEV.

Thanks Jun.

Why do we not use NWDI for building/deploying applications to our DEV system?

Is it correct that we have to create the only Development Configuration on the DEV system?

Thanks in advance!

i am no familiar with CM.

usually developer will deploy their stuff to dev directly from nwds
