Universe using Excel File

Former Member

Hello everybody,

I'm trying to create a universe out of an excel file. I've added the connection in System SDN, and placed the excel file in the server. However, every time I try to create a connection in Universe Design Tool, it keeps showing "The server is not responding (SBO0001)".

I've tried using Driver do Microsoft Excel (.xls), Microsoft Excel Driver (.xls) and Microsoft Excel-Treiber (.xls) when setting the new data source on server, and I've also tried using ODBC Driver from Microsoft -> Excel Spreadsheet and Microsoft -> MS Excel 2003 on Universe Design Tool but it was not successful.

However, when I tried to test the connection locally by setting up the System SDN in my local computer instead of in the server, the connection works. Can anyone point out where I did it wrong?

Thanks.

Dear Ines,

Thanks for the tips, but the error details is "DBD: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified".

I've tried both, but the error persists.

Thanks.

Dear Ucci,

Check please that you installed Office 32 bits on your machine where you have IDT.

Dear Ucci,

Try these steps to create universe based on Excel data source:

Quick Design Wizard if not already open, and click "Begin".

2. Type in a universe name then click "New".

3. Select the Network layer "ODBC Drivers" and then click OK.

4. In the ODBC Drivers window, select the "Login" tab and then type in a name for this connection.

5. Select "Generic ODBC data source" from the drop-down list for database engine.

6. Click the "ODBC Admin" button to define data source name.

7. In the ODBC Data Source Administrator window, click Add.

8. Select "Microsoft Excel Drivers" and click Finish.

9. Enter a data source name.

10. Click "Workbook", select the file you want to access, and click OK.

11. Locate and select the data source name from the drop-down list.

12. Click "Test" to make sure that the server is responding.

You will be back at the Quick Design Wizard "Step 1 of 4". Click the "Next" button and follow through the rest of the steps in order to complete the universe.

I hope that it will work.

Best Regards

Dear Ines,

Thank you for your help. I finally added same connection in my local machine, and I did all the steps you instructed, and now I already have the universe I wanted.

I think it's the problem with 64 bits machine because we have similar errors when we tried to use WebI for the first time weeks ago.

Thanks.
