Hi I need to go ahead with upgrade from BOE XI R1 to BOE XI 4.0. I would like to know if I can have direct upgrade between them or I have to hop through R2 ? Can someone please guide me on high level upgrade plan?

Thanks in Advance,

Gauri

Hi Gauri,

Yes, that is right, you first need to upgrade to XI R2 SP2. This will let you directly upgrade to BI 4.0 without having to go through XI 3.1

Thanks a lot for the input Abhilash! If i understood right- what you said is that once I move to R2 I would be able to migrate from R2 to 4.0 but I just glanced through the blog you pointed and would need to know in detail what Greg meant by saying under Important Potential Stumbling Blocks-

This is not an upgrade-in-place. You cannot load BI 4 on top of XIr2 or XI 3.x and have it "upgrade" your instance. You will have to do a completely new install  !

Hi Gauri,

What Greg mentions in his blog is worth noting before you start your upgrade. The BI 4.0 installer cannot be run on top of XI R2 (in your case) and expect it to upgrade everything in your environment to the new platform.

You need to have a fresh BI 4.0 installation and then move everything from XI R2 to this new environment. The Upgrade Management Tool will need to be used to migrate everything from the older version to BI 4.0.

Also, if you have a LOT of reports and/or instances, you'll want to do incremental migrations - moving less than 1000 objects at a time.

I've migrated several of our clients from XI r2 to 4.0 - what we usually do is use the Import Wizard to create a .biar file from XI r2 and then use Upgrade Management to import the .biar to 4.0.  The reason for this is that frequently Upgrade Management takes a very long time to process all of the dependencies when migrating directly from system to system.  When you include the dependencies in the .biar file and import that, the upgrade is usually much faster.
