Source system:

- Windows Server 2003 x64

- SQL Server 2005 x64

- SAP R/3 Enterprise 4.7 Extension Set 2.0 (4.72)

Target system

- Windows Server 2008 R2 x64

- SQL Server 2008 R2 x64

- ERP 6.0 EhP6

PAM info:

- Windows Server 2003/SQL Server 2005 is not supported in ERP6/EhP6

- Windows Server 2008/SQL Server 2008 is not support in R/3 Enterprise 4.72

According to the "Upgrade and Update Guide SAP ERP 6.0 Including Enhancement Package 6 ABAP" page 11

Source Release: SAP R/3 Enterprise 4.70 Extension Set 2.00

Target Release: SAP ERP 6.0 including SAP enhancement package 6 (based on SAP NetWeaver 7.03)

Comment: A one-step upgrade is supported

Questions:

- How will I perform a one-step upgrade if Windows Server 2003/SQL Server 2005 is not supported by ERP6/EhP6 as per PAM?

- I cannot upgrade SAP R/3 4.72 to Windows Server 2008/SQL Server 2008 because it is not support as per PAM?

Looks like there a conflict of information.

Any feedback is highly appreciated.  Thank you.

Francis

Hi,

Please kindly review the following SAP Notes:

1076022 - Release planning for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (R2)
1443424 - Migration path to Win2008/MSSQL2008 for 4.6C and 6.20/6.40
1476928 - System copy of SAP systems on Windows 2008 (R2): SQL Server

The procedures desribed in the Notes are carefully designed and tested. This leaves you with two options:

a) One step Upgrade: It is related to SAP software only, means you don't need to go from (let's say) R/3 4.6 -> ECC 6.0 and then ECC 6.0 -> EHP6

Basically, you will have to perform a system copy to move the system on Windows Server 2008 (R2) and SQL Server 2008 (R2) and then immediately perform the upgrade to ECC 6.0 EHP6.

Steps are:

1 - Perform a Homogeneous System Copy from Windows 2003 -> 2008 and SQL 2005 -> 2008
2 - Perform the upgrade on this new system.

b) Other option, which would require additional testing is to split the upgrade in two:

   (1) Perform a first SAP upgrade to ERP 6.0 (or ERP 6.0 EhP4).
   (2) Migrate to SQL2008(R2)/Win2008(R2)
   (3) Perform a second SAP upgrade to your target EhP6.

Hope it helps.

Regards,
Sachin

Hi,

Please also see notes:

1409085 Support for SQL Server 2008 (R2) in 4.6C and 6.20, 6.40

1492093 SAP NetWeaver Ugrade/Update on Windows 2008 R2

The steps mentioned above are ok and should work fine.

Another optin would be to perform the migration to SQL Server 2008 and

Windows 2008 and then upgrade to EHP6.

Windows Server 2008R2 minimum SAP release is 7.00 sp>= 14 (that is SAP

NetWeaver >= 7.00 SR3), so SAP NetWeaver '04 SR1 (Web AS 6.40) can NOT

run productively on Windows Server 2008R2,

Windows Server 2008 R2 requires latest 7.20 kernel release,

SAP NetWeaver '04 SR1, Kernel 6.40, can only be run for 'upgrade

purposes'.

Aidan

As EhP 6 for ERP 6.0 is not supported for Windows Server 2003 you have

to perform the upgrade on a Windows Server 2008 server.

A possible way to go is:

1) upgrade your system from 4.6C to EhP5 for ERP 6.0

According to PAM EhP5 for ERP 6.0 is supported for:

Windows Server 2003 / 2008, MSSQL 2005

2) perform a system copy of upgraded system
from: Windows Server 2003, MSSQL2005

to: Windows Server 2008, MSSQL2008

3) Upgrade the copied system to EhP6 for ERP 6.0

Or, alternatively:

1) perform a system copy of current 4.6C system
from: Windows Server 2003, MSSQL2005

to: Windows Server 2008/2008 R2,  MSSQL2008

2) Upgrade  on Windows Server 2008/2008 R2

2) Upgrade the copied system to EhP6 for ERP 6.0

If you choose this option, please keep in mind, as per note:
1443424 -
Migration path to Win2008/MSSQL2008 for 4.6C and 6.20/6.40

Solution
To prepare the upgrade the existing system should be copied to the new
operating system and database platform by applying note 1476928.

The upgrade must be started immediately after the system migration. The

system must not be used productively until you reach the end of the

upgrade downtime.

Hi,

Unfortunately this is not possible and the information in

PAM means that attempting to do this would result in error.

Please note that as well as not being supported with SQL Server 2008 R2,
the SAP ERP 4.7x200 release it is also not supported on Windows Server
2008 R2.

The minimum SAP release supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 is
SAP NW 7.0 SR3, with Kernel 7.0 or higher releases.

Relevant reference on compatibility issues with such OS release
are :

  1443424 - Migration path to Win2008/MSSQL2008 for 4.6C and 6.20/6.40

Aidan,

Thank you for the quick reply.  Unfortunately the document (upgrade guide) is not accurate.  So I need to do a 2-step upgrade procees as follows:

- upgrade to ERP6 SR3 or ERP6/EhP5 (while in Windows Server 2003/SQL Server 2005)

- upgrade/migrate to Windows Server 2008 R3/SQL Server 2008 R2

- update to EHP6

Can you please confirm if the above steps are ok (or preferred).  Thank you.
