Changing a boolean field to show a string instead

I have an integer field that is filled with 0's and 1's 0 being false and 1 being true. I tried formatting the field using this formula but since it is of int data type I can not display a string in it.

if {CurrentMonthAll.Exempt} = 0

then {CurrentMonthAll.Exempt} = "N"

else {CurrentMonthAll.Exempt} = "Y"

So I supressed the field and instead created an unbound string field in its place. I then went into the CurrentMonthAll.Exempt field and set this code under display string:

if {CurrentMonthAll.Exempt} = 0

then {@UnboundString1} = "N"

else {@UnboundString1} = "Y"

but it does not work. It says I am missing a string infront of the if. What am I doing wrong?
