Hi Sanjay,

CAD application and SAP can be bilaterally integrated with the help of CAD Interface tool. If you have Pro/E application, you need Interface tool developed by Riess Engineering, if you have AutoCAD, Inventor, Solid works etc, you will require Interface developed by Cideon etc. Similarly for other Major CAD applications, there will be interfaces available. These CAD Interfaces are developed by SAP partners like Riess or Cideon and will be sold by SAP.

With SAP-CAD Integration, the Product data designed using CAD applications can be managed in SAP through CAD Desktop from within the CAD Environment.  The CAD Objects will be initially transformed to DIR (Document Info Record) which stores all the Meta data information of CAD objects. SAP Document Management System (DMS) forms the base to store these DIR’s. All functionalities of DMS like Versioning, Status Control, Revisioning, Linking with other SAP Objects, Archiving, and Central Storage in Content Server etc are possible.  You can directly create the Material Master or assign Material Master if already existing and also for the Complete CAD Assembly Structure, you can create the Design Bill of Materials in a single click without creating manually which is time consuming and requires lots of effort.

CAD Objects since stored in SAP, can be linked with any SAP Objects like Material, Bill of Material, Equipment, vendor, WBS etc. One more important advantage is using conversion engines; you can convert your CAD objects to Neutral files which can be used for redlining, measuring, sectioning etc without affecting the original object. These neutral files will be attached to the SAP Objects and one doesn’t require CAD application to view these files. Apart from this, there were several other applications which you can get information in Google.
