We're using a year-dependent fiscal year variant. It has 13 normal periods and 3 special periods. Each normal period has 4 weeks (in the first 12 periods), and the remaining days in the year go to period 13. We're now planning to go to calendar periods starting in 2013, so we will need only 12 normal periods. Can we continue to use the same year-dependent fiscal year variant? If so, how?
Some specific questions:
1. When we define a fiscal year variant, one of the first things we do is to specify the number of normal periods vs. special periods. Then, for each fiscal year, we define the dates for each normal period. If we continue to use a variant that is defined to have 13 normal periods, then I should not define dates for period 13 since we no longer need it. Will the system even allow this, or will it force me to enter dates for period 13?
2. Special periods essentially break up the last normal period for year end postings. If I don't define dates for period 13, will it automaticlly mean we won't have access to special periods either?
3. What if I set every year going forward as a shortened fiscal year, say the number of periods are 12, and then go about defining the dates for each period? Will the system allow it, or is there some restriction that we cannot use the shortened fiscal year setting in back to back years, etc.
4. In shortened fiscal years, are special periods available to use in the last defined period of the shortened year?
5. What do I need to do to ensure fixed assets is in alignment, if I use only 12 periods, by either not defining period 13, or by shortneing the fiscal year to have only 12 periods?
Note: We can certainly define a new fiscal year variant for use going forward, but I'm looking at options to minimize making updates to numerous custom programs that are referring to the current fiscal year variant.

Hello,
Please check my comments. Regards.
1 - In a Year deppendent FYV you don't need to enter dates for period 13. Special periods works only for last day of year.
2 - You will have access regularly. All postings must be entered with date 12.31.YYYY. Just if you enter a different date you won't have access to 13 period.
3 - Yes you can do it. There are companies using month format of week as 4-4-5.
4 - Yes, they are. Number of Special periods are defined in OB29
5 - For FA you must define your FYV in OAVH to avoind impacts.

Marssel,
Thanks for responding.
1. The 13th period is currently defined as a normal period in the Fiscal Year Variant that we use. My question is, can we continue to use the same fiscal year variant, and provide no dates for the 13th normal period?
3. So, companies using 4-4-5 periods, define their fiscal years as shortened fiscal years? Why would they need to do that, asssuming they have defined 12 normal periods, and given that they are still using the 12 periods to cover nearly all days of a calendar year?
