Do we need to stop R/3 transactions for LIS loading?

I want to extract data from R/3 using LIS Extractors. Kindly let me know do we need to stop the R/3 Transactions during the Full Upload/ Init Upload process.

Also let me know what is the best LIS update type. If you have any document on LIS update types then plz mail me at zaks_bw@yahoo.com.
