select data source problems

Former Member

As of recent for some reason when i click the refresh button and then click "prompt for new parameter values" and select a new data point to pull from the data base. I get a pop up window that says "select data source" but i am already logged onto the server and connected to the data base. But i click on the data source and type in password anyway and nothing happens. The "select data source" window just pops back up again.

same thing happens even when i select "use current parameter values"

I use to never have a problem with doing this now all of a sudden.

Why is this happening i cant pull any other data points from the data base!!

Hi James,

Could you go to the Database tab > Select Log ON or Off Server.

If you're connected to the Database, you'll see a Log Off button, otherwise, click on the Log On button and see if that helps.

Hi James,

Before you refresh the report please click on Database tab--> select 'verify database' option and update the credentials for the Database.

After showing the message the Database is updated then you will try to refresh the report and check the issue.

Hello James

Needing to verify the database every time is not good as one day, you may find that the verify does not work anymore. E.g.; the verify database option is there to essentially allow the report engine to adjust for minor differences in the database structure / format / schema. Something / someone is changing the basic "layout" of the database. My concern is that one day, this change will be too big for the report engine to adjust and your report will either not work, throw errors and in a worst case scenario bring up incorrect data. I'd recommend investigating what is happening at the database level...

The data base never changes.

I mean people add data and delete data from it. but the format in the access data base never changes. Maybe because people are imputing data and deleting data that it is giving me this problem?

At first i never got this error now all of a sudden which makes it strange to me. But basically your saying that its not crystal reports but the data base.

Yeah - as "tech support" an answer that sounds, that would be my suspicion. And this:

At first i never got this error now all of a sudden which makes it strange to me

confirms my suspicion even more. E.g.; something changed and most certainly, there is no switch in Crystal Reports that would say; "After x days, start throwing errors" (not trying to be bad here...).

Best you could try to do as far a CR is concerned is a repair of the CR install. Perhaps something got corrupted with CR. It is worth doing - but I'm dubious.

And then perhaps some maintenance on the db may be an option. E.g.; reindexing, etc. Just throwing out ideas...
