Foraging for points

Is begging for points allowed again? I ask because I see even SAP employees doing it now.

I was going to advise them that it is "discouraged" but I can't find any rules of engagement that actually says that.

Anyone know? Thanks.

Please use the "report abuse" link for such cases, so moderators can remove these sentences. If you observe that moderators do not seem to act accordingly on your reports, please post here again and I will take this to the moderator discussions.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply Thomas. I thought of using the Abuse button but the categories in there seemed a bit severe (racial abuse etc) and didn't match. I guess it falls under General Abuse.

This reminds me of Thomas bringing up the point, that the term "Report abuse" sounds a bit to severe and it should rather be named "notify moderator" or the like. Why do I bring this up? I use the report button, a lot, and it doesn't imply somebody is pilloried, but instead just a help to point moderators into the right direction. So, IMHO, use it often when expedient.

+ 1 for using this against point-beggars

Cheers, Lukas

P.S. That put aside, who takes points serious anyway, they're not representative for anything, so why ask for them. I can open a blog, tell my dozens colleague to vote, like, etc. etc. and I'm super-duper-platinum in no time. .... ah well, better not warm this one up again

@Rick: yes please choose "General Abuse" and very briefly fill the comment box, e.g. "points begging". Same holds true for offering points or reward as part of the question, please report as "offering points".

@Lukas: unfortunately in some organisations SCN points seem to be a performance indicator, and also personal rivalries, hunting badges, climbing up contributor lists and more are obviously enough of a motivation for begging and cheating.

Well, I keep seeing the same person begging for points and I keep Reporting Abuse but it keeps happening - more than a dozen times now.

Maybe there are different rules depending on who you work for. Have any SAP Employees ever been "guestified", I wonder to myself with a wry smile.

Hi Rick,

I just sent you a direct message to take this offline. I will definitely reach out to the SAP Employee once you give me the name.

Thanks!

Thanks, I did find that one. It doesn't say you can't ask for points, it just mentions "Point-cheating".

Asking for points isn't cheating, just tiresome.

Asking for points is bad form: it isn't in line with good netiquette nor can it be considered good community behavior.  While the do not mention this explicitly, they do remind users to

Be Responsive - If your question or problem was answered then please mark the helpful and correct answers as such.  Mark the discussion as “Answered” so that other members can find their answers more easily

Sp, in short, no: don't ask for points.

Thanks for your reply Jason but what you quoted doesn't discourage asking for points at all, it just encourages the giving of points. I know it's bad form but as far as I can see it's not officially proscribed anywhere so I can't really blame people, especially new users, for doing so.

But, the responses here have reassured me that it is still frowned upon. I'll advise transgressors appropriately and alert the moderators if they keep doing it.
