Does SAP GUI require a ABAP installation of SAP Web AS?

Hi,

I have installed SAP GUI,but am unable to connect.Its giving a message that Message server could not find application server.

Does SAP GUI require a ABAP installation of SAP Web AS?

I have installed only Java Central Installation.
