Dimension members

Hi, we are upgrading from BPC 7 MS to BPC 10 MS.  We have a dimension where one of the dimension members is the same name as the dimension.  This always worked for us but in 10 it does not let you do this and the dimension fails on processing.  I'm not sure the impact of changing the dimension member will have on all of our reports and templates.  Do I have to rename this dimension member?  Thanks, Tracey

I am not sure why this doesn't work in BPC 10.

But, if you do change the dimension member name from DIM1 to DIM2 (WHICH IS BASICALLY A MASTER DATA), then the subsequent processing of the dimension will wipe out all the TRANSACTION data associated to DIM1.

Thanks, I know...we did not want to rename but the member is a parent member so we will not lose the data associated with its base members, correct?

Hi Tracey,

In BPC MS, you have something called NEWID in the dimension member sheet. You can change the ID of a member using this. Just type the new ID to be used against the old one. Once you process the dimension, the data against the old member will be migrated to the new ID, and in the dimension sheet, you will be able to see that the old ID has been replaced by the new one.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tracey,

as Nilanjan wrote just use NEWID to rename the member, bpc will update this ID in all the table involved, so you don't loose anything. The only issue can be if you have used this member value in some memberset of DE\report or if you have hardcoded in some script logic or stored procedures, in this cases you meust search the ID inside (you can use the windows search for DE\report and lgf and manually one by one the stored procs.

Kind regards
