Question about building a Linux sandbox from a brtools backup

Hello all,

We are building a POC box on RHEL 6 w/ Oracle on x86 architecture.  The source box is running on AIX w/ Oracle on pSeries hardware.

My question is this.  Normally under these circumstances you would do a heterogeneous system copy and export the DB.  However, the two boxes are in different sites which constricts our abilities for import/export.

Would it be possible to take a complete offline backup of the source AIX system using BRBACKUP and then restore it into the new Linux system using BRRESTORE off of a NAS or other device?

I have seen this done from AIX to AIX system, but I'm not sure if it's possible across OS.

Any input would be very helpful.  I know this falls outside of best practice, but using the copy guides and traditional import/export method doesn't seem like a viable approach in this scenario.

Thanks.

Hi,

You cannot restore a backup taken on AIX onto a Linux System normally as kernels are different. There are Oracle specific methods told that it is possible. But I suggest you to do it by using Export/Import procedure. This will minimize the data to be carried between sites as Export size of a DB is more than 10 times smaller than the DB Size.

Thanks for the feedback Huseyin! Yes, the size of the exported DB was something we also took into consideration.

I suggest you to go through the system copy procedure based on R3load. Go through the http://service.sap.com/instguides and find the System Copy Guide based on your solution&release
