Upgrade to EHP5 - "Exit now the program and continue after SPAU has been finished"

I'm towards the end of an upgrade from myERP 2004 to ERP 6.0 EHP5. I'm in the phase where I have to do the adjustments in the SPAU transaction. Later I'm going to upgrade another, identical system in the same landscape and I would like to use the same adjustments there.

This SPAU is going to take a while so I would like to do what the SapUp suggest: exit the SapUp program and continue after SPAU has been finished. But if I select Exit and press "Continue", the SapUp doesn't exit: instead, I get the message that the phase has failed; then if I press "Next", I get back to the same screen as before.

So what am I supposed to do to exit the SapUp, so that I can resume it later from the same step where it stopped? I see there's a menu option "Stop Upgrade" but I'm not sure it does what I want.
