Hi
We have a requirement to change the Controlling Area for a Company Code (OX19), and there are Cost Centers exists with these Controlling Area and company code mapping (KS03)
How do we deal with this requirement? How can I change the Controlling Area of existing Cost Centers? How can I change the Controlling Area for a Company code? What is the impact that we have with this change? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Reddy
Hi Reddy,
If transaction data exists there is no possibility for a customer to change the controlling area/company code assignment. All CO relevant postings depend on this assignment.
Please have a look at the online documentation regarding the subject:
Maintaining a Controlling Area:
The deciding factor for setting basic data is the organization of cost accounting, meaning the assignment of company codes to a controlling area. This decision is irreversable as soon as master data is created.'
'The way company code and controlling area are assigned affects the currency settings, meaning currency type, currency, and currency updating, in addition to the controlling area chart of accounts and the fiscal year variant.'
Also review the note 34879
It states:
"A controlling area can be deleted if it no longer contains master data, transaction data and other dependent data (such as groups, number ranges)."
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards
Soumya

Hi Soumya
Thanks again for your response.
I had a look at the Cost Centers associated with this controlling area, and have identified the employees associated with these cost centers.
None of the employees have Payroll run which means there is NO posting happened. This is what I have checked as part of impact analysis. And have also prepared a plan to update the existing Employee Master Data Records to replace old cost centers with new cost centers (with new controlling area).
I think we are good to perform below steps:
1. Delete the cost centers through KS04 to clear CSKS table with old Controlling Area
2. Delete Co. Code and Controlling Area mapping through T code OX19
3. In table V_001_B - Change Chart of Accounts of the Company Code(Old and New Controlling Areas have different cost centers)
4. Assign Co.Code to new Controlling Area through OX19 T code
5. Create Cost Centers with New Controlling Area through T code KS01.
6. Correct Position and Cost Center relationships (T code PO13, A011 Relationship between S - Position & K - Cost Center)
7. Run program RHINTE30 to update Employee's Master Data (Update Infotype 0001).
Hope this plan is fine. Do you see any other problems? If yes, can you please provide your inputs.
Thanks
Reddy
Hi Reddy,
Once the system is live with this setup it is not advisable to change the same without complete checking as it can lead to inconsistencies. I found the below SCN thread which has some information. Please check
http://forums.sdn.sap.com/message.jspa?messageID=9839298
As mentioned there, To avoid inconsistencies in this case, the best would be to contact the department "System Landscape Optimization (SLO)" , which provides special consulting services for similar enquiries: http://service.sap.com/slo for further information
Kind Regards
Soumya
Is there any business logic for changing the controlling area?
First of all system would not allow you to change this if it contains master / transactional data. It is not clear you at what state in your Production system. If you are already go live, please not to take any risk. Please contact SAP SLO team with your requirements. Be careful, some of the programs will totally wipe out the data and it will create a big mess in the system.

Ravi
