Dear All,

My requirement is to integrate MDM with Informatica and SAP BI.

For the above requirement do i need use SAP PI integration server or can i connect directly to the third party tools.

Does the MDM 7.1 has the option to connect directly to the third party tools ??

Thanks

Hi Raj,

Data distribution from MDM or into MDM is possible only through Ports.

Ports are physical locations where inbound file will be stored in case of data import into MDM or outbound file will be placed during data distribution from MDM.

For automatic import, once file is there in 'Ready' folder of port, Master Data Import Server will pick this file and process it and will import the records into MDM. Now this file is generally in XML format and PI is used to prepare XML file and store it in Ready folder of MDM port. PI also gives you additional functionality of performing validations/conversions of data so as to prepare file which can be easily imported in MDM. If you can place XML file in ready folder of MDM by not using PI system, then you can do away with PI as well. But it is generally recommended to use PI as middle-ware.

For Data Distribution from MDM or Syndication from MDM:

MDM system will place file in Port(format would be either XML or text), and PI will have to pick this file and send out to various target systems after format conversion, value conversions, validations etc.

For example, we are sending out XML file to Port and want to send this data to SAP BI system in the form of say Excel format or idoc format and also you have the requirement that 3 particular fields should be concatenated before sending to SAP BI system etc. Then you will simply sysndicate XML file to Port and PI system will pick this up and do concatenation of fields and format conversion and send it out to SAP BI system for reporting purposes.

So if you use PI system it will be very easy to process data and send out to various target systems.

It is generally recommended to use PI as middle-ware(as i stated earlier). But if you want to explore other options that might suit your requirement then you can do that as well.

I hope i have answered your query.

Thanks and Regards,

Hi Vijay,

I think this is very much possible but as every process has merits and demerits, one should weigh them before going with process.

With SAP PI we have MDM Adapter which is a pre-built integration component and helps in monitoring the files between the system.

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_mdm71/helpdata/en/48/956cd09521062de10000000a42189d/frameset.htm

It is recommended to use PI as the netweaver components have tighter integration among themselves as compared to that with other tools.Informatica on the other hand is generally used when data load is expected to be more but with later versions of PI even that can be handled now in SAP PI.

Thanks,

Ravi
