ActiveX Viewer and Win8/IE 10?

We're working on a Windows 8 image, and I'm trying to find a way to get the ActiveX viewer to work.

In Win7 we manually registered the DLLs and it worked fine. I was able to successfully register the DLLs in Win8, and install the ActiveX plugin without errors. But when I try to view a report (rePortal is the server host) I get a blank screen.

I thought I'd ask the question before reinventing the wheel.

Thanks!

There is no version of CR that supports Win 8. Please note that the activeX viewer last shipped in CR XI R2 (CR 11.5) and making this work even on WIN 2008 was problematic. See this blog re. Win 2008, it may have something that will help you out. Other than that; don't use the activeX viewer with WIN 8.

Thanks,

This is a legacy system, and we're stuck with it. We have a new SQL/Crystal 2011/rePortal server up as well, but we still need access to the old system.

The things that apply to Win7/2008/2008r2 don't seem to work for 8/ie10 unfortunately.

If I can't get it to work that's fine. I'm just hoping...

Hi Don

I really do understand. These legacy things are a pain. Unfortunately, I really have not a clue. You may want to use some utilities, see if they help;

ProcessMonitor

Charles / Fiddler

- Not sure if the above work on WIN 8...

Other than that you're stuck with not using this app on WIN 8. Sorry.

Thanks for those links.

I suppose I'll have to document and if I get it working maybe I can help someone else.

Definitely appreciated. But honest, I would not spend more than an hour on this. I think there is a very low chance of success.

One other thing that may make it work is, and I don't see what version that legacy app is using, but try installing Crystal Reports Designer on the Win 8 PC.

Just a suggestion.... I could be you are missing the VS 2005 C++ Security dependency or some other MS files. I don't know if you can even install that onto Windows 8 but it was a common missing dependency.

When you try to manually register the ActiveX Control what's the actual error Windows is popping up?

See if DependencyWalker indicates what may be missing, if that will work on Win 8....

Good luck

The configuration of the server is:

Windows Server 2003r2

SQL Server 2000

Crystal Reports 11

rePortal CR v3.4a

When manually registering the DLLs there are no errors. When running the ActiveX control there are no errors. The report just displays as a blank page.

I've installed CR 2011 on the Win8 machine, but I'm guessing that didn't bring everything I needed. I'll try installing Designer.

Thanks,

Don
