How do I re-establish the proper file associativity for the tx.sap file?

In Windows 7 a user has associated the Adobe Reader file type with files having a ".sap" extension. When they start SAP R/3 Web GUI using a link on the portal it fails because the computer it trying to use the Adobe Reader program to open the SAP application.

On a valid workstation ".sap" files are associated with "SAP GUI FOR WINDOWS" and the description on the protocol is "SAP GUI Shortcut". I know the methodology for establishing file associativity in Windows 7, but I cannot find a program that matches these criteria on any workstation. So I have been unable to reset the file associativity for files having a ".sap" extension. I've been forced into re-installing the SAP GUI application in order to resolve this issue, but there must be a better method.

Tim,

It looks like your user has assigned Adobe Reader program to open (.SAP) files.  I hope they did not change the (.SAP extension to .PDF), if they did, then your only solution is to uninstall/reinstall SAP Gui.

Try the following below.  (Only works if .SAP extension did not change and Open with is assigned to another program).

Go to Control Panel.

1.)  Control Panel --> Default programs --> Associate a file type or protocol with a program.

Here you will have a list of Extensions and associated default Programs.

2.) Search for .SAP

Under Description you will see "SAP File" and for Current Default (you might see Adobe Reader)

3.) Select .SAP and click Change Program

4.)  Here you should browse to the SAP GUI installation path.

C:\Program Files\SAP\FrontEnd\SAPgui

5.) Select sapgui.exe and click OK.

This should reassign all ".SAP" files to be opened with SAP GUI.

6.) Go back to the list and see if .SAP is assigned to SAP GUI.
