Comparison of (suitability of) SAP interface technologies?

Hi,

I want to develop a solution to extract data from SAP.

I have read about different technologies which can be used to achieve that. In particular, RFC-modules (inside SAP), SAP Query and Webservices (SOAP).

My specifications are:

- Calling the function must be possible from outside SAP.

- A platform to base the client (outside SAP) on is available, namely Java.

- The volume of data to extract from SAP is probable to be small (up to 100MB or so), but might be larger going forward.

- Data from different tables in SAP will have to be combined to get sensible, complete records.

In particular, there are two ideas how to go about this: One is using a RFC module (my idea) and the other one is building a webservice (SOAP; not my idea). Now, I favour the approach using an RFC module, but I am lacking proper arguments because I do not have any encompassing comparison of the details of both technologies, in particular the volume of data that can be transferred.

Can anyone help me out with a comparison of the two?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,
