When scheduling a Crystal Reports for Enterprise report, what's a 'Secured Instance'?

In CS2011 & BOE4.0, when you schedule a report created using Crystal Reports for Enterprise, you have the additional option in Format to create a 'Secured Instance'. This appears regardless of the format you select.

First I though it would create a rptr, but as it's available for all formats, that's not the case.

Then I thought this might encrypt the instance on the FRS, but it doesn't.

Then I checked to see if it did anything clever with the file to prevent downloading, but nothing appears any different.

So, apart from having a 'Yes' in the secured instance column, anybody got any idea what this is for?

Thanks

Andrew

Hello,

I believe all this does or means is that this instance is ONLY viewable for the user that scheduled it.

So in other words, try logging on as another user and see if that account can view the instance.

Cheers,

Not sure if you're right and it's buggy, or nearly right!

Here's what I've done:

Logged in as administrator: scheduled the report, marking it as secure.

Logged in as Andrew, who is also an administrator:

I can't see the instance in the history, but if I select 'View latest instance' I can see the report.

Not sure if this is a half baked feature or a feature with a bug! It seems odd you can't do it with other report types too.

Well, it has to do with the managing part of the instances.

So the user can schedule the instance this way, but nobody can actually go into history and remove/reschedule or look at the details of the scheduled successful instance.

So the user can schedule instance for the user base without having ot worry of the instances being manipulated in any way.

Not sure I understand why it was added then - easier to do prevent rescheduling other users instances in security. Then it would apply to all object types. I guess a customer asked if it could be done, and the person answering didn't know the security well?
