Slow performance of HRESS_A_MENU

We are implementing ESS using Web Dynpro ABAP and the Netweaver Business Client in release ERP 605. We are finding the rendering of web dynpro application HRESS_A_MENU to be incredibly slow. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, how did they solve? Even the SAP standard application configuration runs very slow. It is not a server performance issue, as we’re running our test in a very high performance system based on our Production environment. All other web dynpro applications run very fast for us.

For example, a single employee logon takes 30-45 seconds for the ESS menu to render. Doing a system trace shows lots of calls to program CL_XSLT_PROCESSOR=============CP.
