SAP BO 4.0 vs BOXI?

Former Member

Hi friends,

Am new to SAP BO and currently learning BO XI R3. Also planning to understand BO 4.0 later if required but heard that apart from IDT, no much difference noticed?

Is it possible to only be a pure BO consultant? Have already 6 yrs IT exp in different technologies but wanted to change the stream.

Please confirm if this is possible?

Also what's the main difference between BOXI and BO 4.0? I understand that BO 4.0 comes as a suit along with Webi and ? but BOXI doesn't come with Webi and xcelsius.

Is it right that BOXI is for NON-SAP only and BO 4.0 only for SAP OLAP?

Please clear my doubts.

Yes, it is possible only to be a pure BO consultant with no BW or SAP ECC backend intergration experience.

However, it depends on how you want to market your skills.

Remember, we all depend on the demand and supply rule in the IT industry. The more the skills you have, the better off you are. So, it is always better to keep the learning stream going on an on-going basis...

Let me know if you have any specific question/s.

Good luck!

Thanks for the kind reply Rama.

Am in a confusion of how can I showcase myself. Have just completed BO training.

To be a pure BO Consultant, is it mandatory for me to know ORACLE?

Also, if its a NON-SAP, then there is ample work of creating a universe and then reports.

But if its SAP OLAP in BOXI R3, we just import the cube and the universe is automatically created.

Also if its BO 4.0 for SAP, there is NO need of universe it seems.

Please confirm what does a SAP BO consultant do? Does he also work on the NON-SAP universes' at the same time being in a project? Am a little confused.

Please suggest

Please do not get confused. Everything looks complex from the far. Actually, when you start learning and putting effort, it is not tough at all. At a minimum just ask a question in this forum and you will keep making progress with your learning. Do not worry if it is silly!

The good thing about BO is that there are lot of free training videos and step-by-step guides for all the reporting tools. You just need to know how to best search them in Google. Of course, this forum is  another place that is of Great help  for sharing and learning as well.

Learn the tool with any database or flat files. For i.e: try creating few  basic universes, webi reports, xcelsius dashboards first using any database or even a spreadsheet data or a flat file data. I am assuming that you have undergone basic training or you have enough experience to learn by yourself. I am assuming that you have access to a BO environment to practice. If not, please subscribe for one.

In simple words, a BO consultant designs and builds reports and/or dashboards for business users based on requirements using few of the BO tools ( Universe, Webi, Crystal report or Xcelsius).

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Rama

Hi

In BO 4 , U can create the webi report on the top of the bex query by using BICS connection, which is not possible in BO XI .

We use upgrade management tool for migration.

These are some of the differenceu can fnd .

Thanks Ravi.

Is it mandatory in BO R3 and R4 for a BEx query to be present? In both R3 and R4, we can directly connect to the cube and import the objects and proceed with the query preparation right?

Isn't BEx replaced by BO or still we have BEx and on top of it do we have a BO?

Hi harsha,

If it is BO 4, then the webi or crystal can directly connect to the bex query , but if it is other than 4.0 ,

then for the

webi ----> you have to create the universe on the top of that bex query and you have to create the webi report on the top of that universe.

crystal report : ---> for crystal report you can directly connect to the bex query because there is a driver called MDX query driver , this driver will connect directly to the bex . this driver is not present in the webi so as a result we can't create direct connection between the webi report and bex query .

Hope you got it,

Hi Harsha,

Please go thru this link for difference between BOXI and BO 4.0 versions.

http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-28886

Your assumption is wrong BOXI is for NON-SAP only and BO 4.0 only for SAP OLAP.

BOXI and BO 4.0 supports both NON-SAP and SAP OLAP.
