Status Combination Code - Is this field updated automatically?

SAP recently started providing a status combindation field in PROJ and PRPS tables, namely PROJ_STATUS and PRPS_STATUS. Are these fields supposed to be automatically updated whenever there is change in the status at the Project Definition level or at the WBS level? Or do we always have to run the report STATUS_COMB_UPDATE to update these fields? Please clarify.
