Connections b/w HANA & Reporting tools (BO tools, Crystal Reports & Excel)

Hi,

Could you please explain me how we connect BO tools (Webi, Explorer, Crystal ) , Crystal reports & Excel.

I know there are methods like BICS, MDX, SQL, JDBC, ODBC, ODBO & SQLDBC..but I am not clear in which situation we will use which method.

Appreciate your help.

Prasanna

Here is another connection view diagram from an SAP deck. Hope this adds clarity. Remember until FP3 is in GA there is no gurantee that all connectivity options are available in FP3 ramp-up.

    • BICS is a connectivity option for SAP BW that provides direct connectivity to BW BEx queries without the need for a BO universe. It is now a mature connectivity and is the preferred access method to access SAP BW BEx query data from a performance standpoint..

SQL MDX - is the internal language used by the SAP BW OLAP engine to generate output from multi-dimensional data model such as a BW info cube

JDBC / ODBC / ODBO / SQLDBC are all drivers owned by different vendors. ODBC is Microsoft , JDBC is Java , and so on..

      Hope this helps..

    Hi Prasanna,

This is how the flow goes.....

HANA Models->Excel(Direct connection via ODBO) which uses MDX(Multi Dimensional Expression)

HANA Models->AO(Analysis for Office) which uses ODBC

HANA Models->Crystal Reports 2008(or 2011) which uses ODBC

HANA Models->BO Explorer(This is direct connection) which uses JDBC

HANA Models->Universe(created using Information Design Tool)->Dashboard which uses JDBC

HANA Models->Universe(created using Information Design Tool)->Crystal Reports for Enterprise which uses JDBC

HANA Models->Universe(created using Information Design Tool)->WebI which uses JDBC

To summarize, this is how the flow goes....

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. It is very good and easily understandable.

I do have one more doubt.

I have some documents which tells about some methods ..BICS SQL MDX

      What is the relation b/w

      BICS SQL MDX

      &

      JDBC ODBC ODBO SQLDBC.

      Highly Appreciate your help.

    For Excel.

    Go to Data Main menu

    From Other sources

    Select HANA MDX

Provide Logins (logins pop up 2 times)

select the tables.(Drag and drop in excel pivotal tables what ever the rows and columns you want)

Then you can see the result.

    Hope helpful...

    Regards,

    BWIAN..
